Gary is recently retired from the technology industry, where he successfully led both public and private companies with 150 to more than 8000 employees. He most recently served as Chief Executive Officer of MarkLogic Corporation. He previously served as Chief Executive Officer of eMeter Corporation and VERITAS Software. Gary also spent over 14 years at Oracle Corporation, where he had both technical and executive leadership roles. He has served on the Board of Directors of BMC Software, Taleo, and other public and private technology companies.
In addition to his professional career, Gary is a long tenured emergency services volunteer. He is a member and previous leader of both the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue Unit and Menlo Park Fire’s California Task Force 3 Urban Search and Rescue team. He also volunteers as an Emergency Medical Technician with Rock Medicine, providing emergency medical care at large Bay Area events.
Gary holds a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. He was the founding chairman of the Cal Poly Foundation and is a long-term member of the universities President’s Council of Advisors. He is currently sponsoring a technology research project at Cal Poly on the use of Artificial Intelligence to improve the outcome of Search and Rescue operations. In 2010, Cal Poly honored Gary with an honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters.
As a newly elected and first-time member of the Menlo Park Fire Protection District Board of Directors, Gary will apply both his corporate and emergency services experiences to his role as a board member. He has a passion for emergency services and will help the district deliver best-in-class emergency services and support community disaster preparedness so that we can help ourselves and our neighbors.
Gary is married and has two sons, both of whom are graduates of Menlo-Atherton High School. He has lived in Atherton since 2004.
